![]() The Shawnee Mission School District encompasses 72 square miles in suburban Johnson County, Kans. and is located just southwest of the Kansas City metropolitan area. With 41 elementary schools, seven middle schools and five high schools, the district serves over 31,000 students living in suburban communities. The Shawnee Mission School District is fully accredited by the state of Kansas and the North Central Association. The district employs approximately 2,900 full-time equivalent teachers. The average teacher has 16 years of classroom experience and all teachers are required to have a college degree and Kansas State Department of Public Instruction certification. Seventy percent of Shawnee Mission teachers have master's degrees and many have doctorates.
The seven-member board of education governs the Shawnee Mission School District. The district is divided into five attendance areas with one high school, one or two middle schools and several elementary schools serving families who live in that area. Patrons in each area elect one board member and four advisory members to represent their views on education. In addition to the members elected from each of the five geographic attendance areas, two members are elected at-large. The board of education meets in the McEachen Administrative Center board rooms, 7235 Antioch Road, unless otherwise specified. These meetings are normally held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m., and are open to the public.
